Booking spring projects

A finish you'll notice every day.

Interior and exterior decorating done the slow, proper way. Everything dust-sheeted, surfaces prepared back to bare, lines cut clean by hand — and your home left immaculate. The kind of finish that still looks right in ten years.

What we do

Decorating, done to a standard you can live with

From a single room to a whole house, period plaster to a sprayed kitchen — the same care goes into every job. Proper preparation, the right paint for the surface, and one decorator seeing it through from dust-sheet to final coat.

The decorator

One decorator, dust-sheets down, seeing it through.

I'm a time-served painter and decorator and I've spent twenty-two years finishing homes across Oxford — the last fourteen running Halford & Vane as a small, careful firm. I take on a handful of jobs at a time so the person who quotes your work is the person on the brush, start to finish.

The way I see it, a great finish is mostly preparation you never see — dust-sheets over everything, surfaces sanded and made good, edges caulked, lines cut clean by hand. I'd rather spend the extra day getting the prep right than rush a top coat onto a poor surface. You're left with a finish that lasts and a home that's spotless, not a building site.

  • Time-served — you deal with the decorator
  • Dust-sheeted, masked and left immaculate
  • The right paint system for every surface
  • Workmanship guaranteed for two years

A finish that lasts

Why the prep is the whole job

Anyone can put paint on a wall. A finish that still looks right in ten years comes from what happens before the top coat — here's the care that goes in, and exactly what every client gets, every room.

  • Preparation is most of the job

Filling, sanding, caulking and making-good is where a lasting finish is won or lost. We take the time to get the surface sound and flat first — because a top coat only ever looks as good as what's underneath it.

  • The right paint for the surface

New plaster, lime, bare wood and previously-painted masonry all want a different system. We specify breathable, hard-wearing or weatherproof paints to suit each surface, so the finish bonds, lasts and doesn't flake or blister later.

  • Dust-free sanding

We sand with dust-extraction wherever we can and sheet everything off, so the fine dust that usually settles over a whole house simply doesn't. You can live alongside the work, not move out of it.

  • Crisp, hand-cut lines

Edges between walls, ceilings and woodwork are cut in clean by hand, not rushed with tape. It's slower and it's the detail you notice every day — the difference between a decorated room and a properly finished one.

Reviews

What our clients say

4.9 average from 168 reviews

  • The preparation was on another level — they spent two full days sanding and filling before a drop of paint went on. The finish on the woodwork is like glass and you genuinely couldn't tell anyone had been in the house. Immaculate from start to finish.

  • We had the kitchen sprayed rather than replaced and it looks brand new for a fraction of the cost. Everything was masked off so carefully, no overspray anywhere, and they hoovered up every evening. Quiet, tidy and properly skilled.

  • Our house is Victorian and they really understood it — breathable paint on the old plaster, lovely careful work around the original mouldings. Calm, unhurried and a pleasure to have around. The colours they helped us choose are spot on.

How a project runs

From first colour chat to a finish you'll love

  1. Consultation & colour

We visit, talk through what you want and help you choose colours and finishes that work for the room and the light — with sample drawdowns so you can see the paint on your own wall before deciding.

  2. Quote & schedule

You get a clear, itemised written quote and an honest schedule — what we'll do, in what order, and how long it'll take. No vague day-rates and no surprises once we've started.

  3. Prep & protect

Dust-sheets down, furniture covered and moved, surfaces filled, sanded and made good. The unglamorous part, done properly — because it's where the lasting finish comes from.

  4. Paint & reinstate

The right paint applied in proper coats, lines cut clean by hand, then everything cleaned, reinstated and snagged. We leave the room finished and your home spotless.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we're asked most about quotes, colour, mess and dust, timings, paint and guarantees. Can't see yours? Call or send a message — we're always happy to talk it through.

  • Do you charge for a quote or colour consultation?
No — coming to see the work, talking through colours and finishes, and giving you a clear written quote are all free and no-obligation. We'd rather take the time to understand the room and the light properly than rush a price over the phone.
  • How much mess and dust will there be?
As little as we can possibly manage. We dust-sheet floors and furniture, mask off everything that isn't being painted, sand with dust-extraction where we can, and clean up at the end of every day. Most clients are surprised how liveable the house stays while we're working.
  • Can you help me choose colours?
Yes — colour is part of the job. We'll talk through how a room is used and how the light falls, suggest palettes that work, and put sample drawdowns on the actual wall so you can see the real paint in your own space before committing. There's no charge for it.
  • What paint do you use?
Whatever is right for the surface and the look you want. We're a Dulux Select decorator and regularly specify and supply Farrow & Ball, Little Greene and other premium ranges — but the real skill is matching the paint system to the surface (breathable on old plaster, weatherproof on masonry) so it lasts.
  • Will you move and cover the furniture?
Yes. We move what needs moving, cover everything that stays with clean dust-sheets, and put it all back at the end. You don't need to empty the room before we arrive — just clear small valuables and we'll take care of the rest.
  • How long does a typical room take?
It depends entirely on the condition of the surfaces and the amount of prep, but a single well-maintained room is usually two to four days, and a whole house a couple of weeks. We'll give you an honest schedule with the quote and keep you posted if anything changes.
  • Do you guarantee your work?
We do — all of our workmanship is guaranteed for two years. We're fully insured with £5m public liability, and because we use the right systems prepared properly, problems are rare. If anything isn't right, we'll come back and put it right.
