What we do

Every roof — repairs, re-roofs and flat roofs

Leak, storm damage or a roof that's reached the end of its life — we survey it, tell you straight what it needs, and weatherproof it properly. Emergency or planned, one roofer sees it through from survey to sign-off.

The roofer

You deal with the roofer who climbs the ladder.

I'm a time-served roofer and I've spent twenty-two years on roofs across Sheffield and the Peak edge — the last fourteen running Slate & Lead as a local, family firm. Slate, tile, flat roofs and leadwork: there isn't much weather or much roof I haven't had to put right.

When you call, you get the roofer who'll actually do the work — not a call centre and not a salesman. The same person who surveys your roof gives you the written quote, does the job and stands behind it for years after. We survey first, tell you honestly what the roof really needs, and leave it watertight and cleared up — every time.

  • Local, family-run — you deal with the roofer
  • Survey first, honest written quotes
  • Lead-coded detailing & correct laps
  • Left watertight, cleared up & guaranteed

Built to weather it

What makes a roof actually last

"Weatherproof" and "guaranteed" are easy to print. Here's what they actually mean on your roof — the difference between a roof that's still watertight in thirty winters and one that leaks by the third.

  • A roof that's actually waterproof

We don't just stop today's leak — we find why water got in and put right the felt, the laps and the detailing so it stays out. A roof you forget about, because it simply works.

  • The right system for your roof

Slate, tile, GRP, EPDM or felt — we spec the covering and the build-up that suits your roof's pitch, age and exposure, not whatever's quickest. The right system is what makes a guarantee mean something.

  • Properly flashed & finished

Most roofs fail at the joins. Our lead-coded valleys, flashings and chimney details are dressed by hand to code 4/5 lead — the unglamorous craft that keeps the weather out for decades.

  • Safe scaffold & working at height

Every job is properly scaffolded or access-towered, height-safe and to plan — protecting our roofers, your property and the people below. Working at height done right is non-negotiable.

Reviews

What our customers say

4.9 average from 286 reviews

  • We lost half a dozen tiles and the ridge in that big February storm, with water coming through the back bedroom. They were out the same day, made it safe and watertight, then came back and did the proper repair. Calm, straight and no panic — exactly what you want.

  • Had the whole roof stripped and re-slated. They surveyed it properly first, gave us a written quote that didn't change, and the workmanship is faultless — the lead valleys are a thing of beauty. Spotless site every day and a 25-year guarantee in writing.
    Geoff & SueFull re-roof · DronfieldCheckatrade
  • Persistent leak round the chimney that two other roofers had 'fixed'. These actually found the cause, re-dressed the lead flashing the right way, and it's been bone dry through two winters since. You can tell they're time-served.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we're asked most about survey charges, free checks, how fast for a leak, what the guarantee covers, insurance and flat-roof lifespan. Can't see yours? Give us a call or send a message — happy to talk it through.

  • Do you charge for a roof survey or callout?
No — the roof check and survey are free and with no obligation. We'll come out, take a proper look at the roof, and give you an honest written quote for any work needed. You only pay if you go ahead with the job.
  • How fast can you get to a leak or storm damage?
For a leak or storm damage we'll prioritise getting you made safe and watertight as quickly as we can — often the same day for genuine emergencies. We'll be straight with you about timing rather than leave you wondering, then arrange the proper repair once things are stable.
  • What does your guarantee actually cover?
Our workmanship is guaranteed in writing for up to 25 years on full roofs (the exact length depends on the system and materials). That covers the quality of the work itself — the fixings, laps, felt and detailing — on top of any manufacturer's guarantee on the materials. You get it in writing, not just a handshake.
  • What do NFRC and CompetentRoofer mean?
The NFRC (National Federation of Roofing Contractors) is the UK's main roofing trade body — membership means we're vetted, qualified and audited. CompetentRoofer is a government-authorised scheme that lets registered roofers self-certify re-roofing work as compliant with Building Regulations. Both are a sign you're dealing with a proper, accountable roofer.
  • Can you handle insurance and storm-damage claims?
Yes. We provide clear written reports and photographs for your insurer, quote the work properly, and carry out insurance-backed storm and damage repairs. We'll make the roof safe first, then handle the claim work to a standard that actually lasts.
  • How long should a flat roof last?
A flat roof done properly should last decades, not a few summers. A good GRP fibreglass or EPDM rubber flat roof, laid with the correct falls and detailing, typically carries a 20–25 year life — far longer than old-style pour-and-roll felt. The lifespan comes down to the system and, just as much, the quality of the detailing.
  • How do you work safely at height?
Every job is properly scaffolded or worked from an access tower with the right edge protection — we're PASMA/IPAF trained and fully insured. Working at height is the part of roofing we never cut corners on, for our roofers, your property and anyone below.
  • Which areas do you cover?
We cover Sheffield and the surrounding areas — Rotherham, Chesterfield, Dronfield, Hillsborough, Stocksbridge, Penistone, Worksop and nearby. Not sure if you're in our patch? Just ask and we'll let you know.
