Engineering-led

A scaffolding contractor that designs and signs off, not just bolts up tubes.

Girdwell Access & Scaffolding has erected access scaffolding across West Yorkshire for 22 years, working for main contractors and homeowners alike from our yard in Leeds.

We run directly-employed, CISRS-carded squads and own our plant, so we control quality and programme from survey to strike. Complex scaffolds are designed with drawings and calculations; every scaffold is tagged, inspected and handed over with a certificate — so it's safe, compliant and properly documented.

How we keep you safe and signed-off

Scaffolding standards can sound like alphabet soup. Here's what the headline terms mean in plain English — and exactly what you can count on, every single scaffold.

  • TG20:21

The NASC guidance for compliant tube-and-fitting scaffolds. Standard scaffolds are erected to a TG20 compliance sheet; anything outside it gets a bespoke design and calculations — so the scaffold is proven to carry the loads it'll see.

  • TG30:24

The industry guidance on safe operative conduct and competence at height. It underpins how our squads work — trained, carded and supervised — so people stay safe on and around your scaffold.

  • CISRS

The Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme — the recognised UK card for scaffolders. Our operatives are CISRS-carded, so you have trained, assessed people putting up your access, not just labour.

  • SCAFF-TAG

Every completed scaffold carries a tag stating it has been inspected and is safe to use, with a date. We re-inspect at least every 7 days and after bad weather, and keep your scaffold register up to date.

  • Girdwell designed and erected the scaffold for a tight city-centre elevation and hit every programme date. Drawings supplied, tags up, register kept current — exactly what we need from a scaffold contractor.

  • We use Girdwell across our new-build sites. CISRS squads, clean working around our trades, and handover certificates every time. Dependable and on programme.

  • Needed scaffold up fast for a roof and chimney repair. They surveyed, quoted clearly and had it tagged and safe within the week. Tidy job and the lads were spot on.

How it works

Rigorous from survey to strike

  1. 01

    Site survey & design

We survey the site, confirm loadings and access, and produce a TG20 compliance sheet or a bespoke design drawing where the job needs one.

  2. 02

    Erect to drawing

CISRS-carded squads erect the scaffold to the drawing and to programme, working cleanly and safely around your other trades.

  3. 03

    Tag, inspect & handover

The completed scaffold is inspected, scaff-tagged and handed over with a certificate, so it's safe to use and properly documented from day one.

  4. 04

    Inspect & strike

We re-inspect at least every 7 days and after bad weather, keep your register current, then strike the scaffold cleanly when the works are done.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we're asked most about compliance, inspections and lead times. Can't see yours? Give us a call or send a message — we're happy to explain.

  • What does TG20:21 mean for my scaffold?
TG20:21 is the NASC's guidance for compliant tube-and-fitting scaffolds. For standard scaffolds we erect to a TG20 compliance sheet, which proves the configuration is safe for the loads it will carry. Anything outside TG20 — unusual loads, big spans, temporary roofs — gets a bespoke design with calculations. Either way, you get a scaffold that is demonstrably fit for the job.
  • Do I need a design drawing?
Many domestic and straightforward commercial scaffolds are covered by a TG20 compliance sheet and don't need a separate design. More complex scaffolds — heavy loadings, temporary roofs, shoring, public access or anything non-standard — do need a design drawing and calculations, which we produce in-house. We'll tell you up front which your job needs.
  • How often is a scaffold inspected?
Every scaffold is inspected and scaff-tagged before it's handed over, then re-inspected at least every 7 days while it's in use, and again after any event that could affect it — such as high winds or alterations. We log each inspection so your scaffold register stays current and compliant.
  • Are you insured and are your scaffolders qualified?
Yes. We carry £10m public liability insurance and our operatives are CISRS-carded, so you have trained, assessed scaffolders on site. We're a NASC member and CHAS accredited, and we're happy to provide our documentation for your pre-qualification.
  • What are your lead times for bigger jobs?
For straightforward scaffolds we can often be on site within a few days of survey. Larger or designed scaffolds need a little longer for design and planning, but we work to your programme and will give you a firm date at the survey. For storm damage and emergency make-safe we offer a rapid-response service.
  • Do you cover both domestic and commercial work?
Both. We erect everything from a single domestic roof scaffold to multi-storey commercial elevations, temporary roofs and phased new-build sites. The same standards apply across the board: surveyed, designed where needed, erected to drawing, tagged, inspected and handed over.
